What is asthma?

According to the World Health Organization, inflammation and narrowing of the small airways in the lungs cause asthma symptoms, which can be any combination of cough, wheeze, shortness of breath and chest tightness¹. I causes the air breathed in to be trapped in the chest, and the thorax is blocked. This sensation is accompanied by an irritating cough and sometimes a feeling of anxiety. The duration of asthma attacks is estimated to be several minutes and can be up to a few hours. Its intensity can vary depending on the individual.

Today, asthma is the number one chronic disease in children and affects more than 4 million people in France (6.7% of the population and 9% of children)². According to the figures, this disease also causes 1,000 deaths per year among those under 65 and is responsible for 600,000 days of hospitalization and 7 million days of sick leave per year.

relieve their symptoms, people with asthma will usually see their doctor for a prescription and treatment with cortisone, Ventolin, or other similar medication. These treatments allow the bronchi to dilate and therefore improve the breathing of the affected individual.

The role of air quality for asthmatics

Air quality also plays a vital role in the well-being of people with asthma and in reducing their episodes. Why? In the air, we find many fine particles that can play a role in triggering attacks since they can inflame the airways.

Fine particles can be found outside as well as inside the house. In fact, the air is on average 5 to 10 times more polluted indoors. In addition to particulate pollution, we face other types of pollution such as chemical and biological pollution indoors. Sprays, paints, solvents, textiles, perfumes, pollens, grasses, mites, tobacco, moulds, or even animal hair are the main sources.

A recent study on children with asthma conducted by Chinese and American experts in the Shanghai region during a period of peak pollution showed that the concentrations of PM2.5 in children's rooms were lowered by a third to two thirds when they used HEPA filters as compared to low-quality filters.

That’s not all: with a reduced concentration of PM2.5, researchers noticed a marked improvement in children's breathing (73.1% increase in respiratory elasticity). This perfectly demonstrates that the use of an air purifier equipped with a HEPA filter can only benefit the health of people with asthma.

Our AIRVIA Medical purifiers are all equipped with a HEPA H13 filter to capture up to 99.97% of particles with a diameter greater than or equal to 0.3 µm to purify indoor air and relieve symptoms of people with asthma.

Our purifiers are also equipped with other high-performance technologies that can also help people with fragile respiratory tracts. Among these, activated carbon makes it easy to rid the air of chemical pollutants such as ozone, benzene, and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Thanks to its high gas absorption capacity, activated carbon also combats bad odours very effectively.
